Postgraduate Study at IHR

Why do a PhD with us?

Research at IHR benefits greatly from the unique resources available to it as an MRC Institute. This means that doing a PhD at IHR, rather than at a university department, has certain distinct advantages. In particular:

  • We provide access to cutting-edge laboratory and research facilities, including dedicated engineering and computer support.
  • Unlike university staff, all of our PhD supervisors are full-time scientists. None of our senior staff have teaching obligations and this allows us to be entirely research focussed.
  • We provide funding for you to attend at least one major international conference during your three years at IHR, plus other national conferences.
  • We have unrivalled access to patients in ENT/audiology departments via our clinical sections.
  • No single university department can match our multi-disciplinary structure.
  • You will be given all the support and training necessary to present your work in peer-reviewed journals.
  • All our students are registered with the local university and have many opportunities to interact with students from their departments.
