Postgraduate Study at IHR

How to Apply

If you would like to apply for one of the projects offered for 2012, you should contact either Dr Katrin Krumbholz or the project supervisor. Informal visits can also be arranged.

We ask you to submit a completed application form, current CV and a covering letter stating which project you would like to apply for. The application form can be downloaded from our website in PDF or Word format. Please submit your application to Katrin Krumbholz (phds@ihr.mrc.ac.uk), MRC Institute of Hearing Research, University Park, Nottingham, NG7 2RD.

Applications are welcome from students who have a track record of high achievement (first- or upper second-class degree) in a relevant field; see project descriptions for further details.

We expect to interview applicants between February and May 2012. All applications received by 28th February 2012 will be considered for all projects. Thereafter, you should contact Dr Katrin Krumbholz to check whether applications for your chosen project are still being considered.

Funding

IHR offers between three and five MRC-funded studentships every year. Funding is usually for three years. However, for some projects, candidates without prior experience will be encouraged to complete a one-year taught Masters (MSc or MRes) course before starting their PhD work; the Masters is fully funded by IHR. The award includes an enhanced stipend of £15,000 pa (£13,290 pa during the Masters), as well as tuition fees and travel costs for attendance at scientific conferences. Note that the award is only available to students who satisfy specific eligibility criteria. Details can be found on the MRC website at www.mrc.ac.uk/Fundingopportunities/Applicanthandbook/Studentships/Eligibility/index.htm.
